Gábor BIRÓ painting exhibition

Gábor BIRÓ painting exhibitionDuration of the exhibition: 20th of March – 30th of April 2026
Curators: László Lőrincz, György Szücs

Opening: At the opening of the exhibition, Dr. Beáta Bordás, coordinator of the Transylvanian Art Centre, gave a welcoming speech; the exhibition was opened by art historian György Szücs. At last spoke up the co-curator of the exhibition, László Lőrincz and the painter Gábor Biró on Friday, March 20, 2026 at 6 p.m.

Art historian György Szücs, the author of the study from this exhibition’s catalogue, summarized the artist’s career as follows: “To characterize the career profile, shaped by personal temperament, environment, and specific historical circumstances, and to nuance the consciously constructed oeuvre despite the expanded opportunities after 1989/90 (foreign exhibitions, art colonies), the term »motif-concealing abstraction« may be the most appropriate. If we take stock of the traces of »human suffering and passion« in Biró’s work, the scale ranges from intricate line dynamics to calm, monochrome canvases (Garden series), from palm-sized occasional drawings, sometimes containing textual maxims, and lyrical pastels to larger, vivid, impasto tableau paintings. Writing is also present, letters sometimes appearing, besides the title, inserted in the colour palette of the painting, hidden among the brushstrokes.”

This exhibition provides an overview of the artist’s entire career, from his early figurative experiments through his paintings from the 1980s in Sfântu Gheorghe and Odorheiu Secuiesc, to his final gestural works created on a digital medium. The works consistently reflect an abstract expressionist approach concealing motifs and symbols; depictions of Icarus, symbolizing human fate, and the series of Corpus Christi, promising redemption, suggest the existence of a celestial–terrestrial coordinate system.

Gábor BIRÓ (Odorheiu Secuiesc, 1955)
He completed his primary and secondary education in his hometown; he was prepared for the college entrance exam by László Kiss. Between 1976 and 1980, he studied painting at the “Ion Andreescu” Institute of Fine Arts in Cluj-Napoca, where his teachers were Paul Sima and Victor Ciato, but Gábor Miklóssy also corrected his work. From 1980 to 1985, he was an art teacher in Ozun and was granted a studio in Sfântu Gheorghe, where he met Imre Baász. He was a regular participant in exhibitions in Covasna County and then in Harghita County. In 1985, he moved back to Odorheiu Secuiesc. Between 1985 and 1990, he led a visual arts circle at the Cultural Centre in Odorheiu Secuiesc. In 1998, his disciples formed the Udvar Group. He participated in numerous creative camps (Lăzarea, Mărtiniș, Miskolc, Győr, Makó, Lendva, Szentgotthárd, Maribor, Bálványos, Briare), and between 1991 and 2001 he also worked as an editor, restorer, and museographer.

PRINTING IN PROGRESS – Contemporary Hungarian Graphic Art in Plane and in Space

PRINTING IN PROGRESS – Contemporary Hungarian Graphic Art in Plane and in SpaceDuration of the exhibition: 2026. march 4th of March – 9th of april 2026
Curators: Berentz Péter, Dobó Bianka, Uszkay Tekla

Opening: At the opening of the exhibition, Dr. Beáta Bordás, coordinator of the Transylvanian Art Centre, gave a welcoming speech, as did Prof. István Erőss, rector of the Hungarian University of Fine Arts, and András László Kósa, director of the Liszt Institute - Hungarian Cultural Center in Bucharest. The exhibition was opened by Tekla Uszkay, art historian, on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, at 6 p.m.

The exhibition aims to present a comprehensive overview of the transformation and genre diversity of contemporary Hungarian graphic art over the past four decades. The subtitle, "Contemporary Hungarian Graphic Art in Plane and in Space", refers to the shift in scale when graphic art moves from the flat surface of paper into space, exploring the possibilities of the genre and transforming into spatial graphics and installations. The exhibition, organized jointly by the Hungarian University of Fine Arts, the Liszt Institute – Hungarian Cultural Center in Bucharest, and the Transylvanian Art Centre, features works selected from the Library, Archive and Art Collection of the Hungarian University of Fine Arts and selected works by graphic artists and designers teaching at the institution, as well as some of the most outstanding diploma works of the last few years.

Visitors can gain insight into a wide range of styles and techniques, from traditional printmaking to digital technology, and discover the fresh, original perspectives of young talents. The selection, which is on display in the third-floor exhibition space of the Transylvanian Art Center, is both a tribute to Hungarian graphic traditions and a look ahead to new trends. At the same time, it emphasizes the continuity of artistic processes, showing that graphic art is still a living and constantly evolving art form, in which artists at the beginning of their careers—while confidently mastering the traditional high pressure, intaglio and planographic printmaking techniques — also experiment with various tools and practices of contemporary art.
